About the Florida Keys
The weather in the
Florida Keys is great all year round. Temperatures rarely drop into
the upper 60s and usually stay well into the 70s and 80s in the
winter months. Miami and Miami Beach
is just a short ride off of the northern end of the Florida Keys and
is a vacation destination for many who live in the Keys or the
Conchs of Key West
Many people think the Florida Keys begin at Key
Largo. Infact, to the north lie nearly 50 more keys or ancient coral
reef islands that are mostly undeveloped. However for many taking a
holiday in Florida Keys, Key Largo is the starting point.
Largo means long in Spanish and Key Largo is the
longest of the Florida Keys. Key Largo is sandwiched between the
watery wilderness of the Everglades National Park to the west and
the fish-covered coral formations of North America's only living
coral barrier reef to the east.
Hollywood has long been attracted to Key Largo.
However, it’s not just Hollywood producers who are drawn to the
wildlife here. Six miles offshore in the Florida Keys National
Marine Sanctuary you will find the wreck of the Spiegel Grove, a
510-foot Navy ship deliberately scuttled in June 2002 as the
backbone for a new coral reef.
Traveling south you come to Islamorada and then
Marathon Key. Again, the Spanish influence is in the name. Morada is
Spanish for purple. Islamorada is comprised of six islands including
Plantation Key, Windley Key, Upper Matecumbe Key, Lower Matecumbe
Key and the offshore islands of Indian Key and Lignumvitae Key. In
the waters surrounding these islands are some of the best sport
fishing in the world, so Islamorada likes to call itself and the
surrounding islands the "Sport Fishing Capital of the World." Divers
and snorkelers flock to the History of Diving Museum that opened in
2006.
Marathon, situated mainly on Vaca, Fat Deer, and
Grassy Keys, is a 10-mile-long island city at the midpoint of the
Florida Keys island chain. Locals call their home "The heart of the
Keys" for geographic reasons.
If you've had enough of the crowds, the
islands of the Lower Keys are the place for you. The Lower Keys
begin where the Florida Keys island chain snakes westerly toward the
sunset, shortly after the famous Seven Mile Bridge. It is a quiet
region of small resorts.
Probably the most famous is the resort of Key West. Take a
vacation in Key West and you will find a city where real estate
titles date back to the Kings of Spain. There’s palm-lined streets,
gingerbread mansions, tin-roofed conch houses and you will walk in
the footsteps of Ernest Hemingway, Thomas Edison, Lou Gehrig, Harry
Truman, and Tennessee Williams.
